Present day billboard advertising roots can be traced to lithography, an invention of the late 1790s. This invention paved way for the possibility to mass produce as many posters and announcements as businesses needed. At that time the quality of the posters could not stand up to the exposure of outdoor elements for prolonged periods of time, which was a major limitation.
